Discounter Lidl’s trial project in the Belgian city of Ghent that offers fulfilment of online grocery orders using bicycle couriers has been deemed such a success the retailer plans to expand the number of items available and examine the prospect of taking the idea to other cities in the market.

To date, 25,000 orders have been delivered using the Simpl app in conjunction with intermediary Cargo Velo, with young parents showing the most uptake for the offer. Most of these shop online on Sunday evenings, meaning Mondays see a spike in delivery orders. Lidl has now added a further 350 SKUs to the offer and is now “looking at the options in other cities”.
